EPA Study Confirms Safety of Synthetic Turf: Low Chemical Exposure Levels Comparable to Natural Grass

In April 2024, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in partnership with the CDC, ATSDR, and CPSC, published the largest study on tire crumb rubber in synthetic turf fields conducted in the U.S. The research assessed chemical exposure levels in athletes using these fields. The findings indicated low chemical exposure, with no significant differences in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) levels between users of synthetic turf and natural grass. Additionally, blood tests showed no significant increase in metal exposure for turf users, aligning with levels found in the general population. The study concluded that exposure to chemicals from recycled tire crumb rubber is minimal and comparable to natural grass, supporting results from prior research. Overall, the study reassures that synthetic turf fields do not pose significant health risks related to chemical exposure.

New Cherokee County High School Football Field Installation

Take a look at the recently completed field at Cherokee High School in Centre, Alabama. One of the biggest features of this project was that SprinTurf included our heat mitigation turf cooling system. This propreitary cooling technology lowers the surface temperature of the turf, it also provides a look and feel that is similar to a natural grass field. With the majority of sports fields receiving direct sunlight it is very important to keep turf temperatures and player safety in mind. This is the reason why SprinTurf  developed our turf cooling system.

Not only does SprinTurf’s heat mitigation system provide lower turf temperatures, but it also meets GMax impact requirements without the use of an underlying pad. Meaning you’re able to meet player safety/impact requirements without the investment of a shock pad under the turf.

Why It’s Important to Partner With a United States Turf Manufacturer on Your New Field

You’ve been seeing it all over the news recently, masses of container ships are waiting outside of ports around the United States waiting to deliver products. These thriving ports and the warehousing and trucking that support them have recently become a bottleneck in the global supply chain. Pre-Covid it was not common for container ships to wait in harbors before they were able to dock and offload their cargo. Currently at the Port of Los Angeles, CA the expected wait time to “make port” is about 12 to 14 days, with close to a quarter-million containers filled with goods sitting on ships. These import bottlenecks are resulting in scarcity of products, increased lead times and higher prices. In the construction industry, this means that projects and contractors reliant on imported supplies are seeing significant project delays and cost increases.

Here is a great article that discusses why the supply chain issues we’re currently facing could get worse. (source: CNN Business)

Supply Chain Shortages: Why is there a shortage? What is the impact?

Supply chain shortages: Why is there a shortage; what is the impact?
The Wall Street Journal Illustrates the Current Sypply Chain Issues Facing the United States

In times like this the supply chain is a significant project risk and owners should be aware of and attempt to mitigate by insuring a 100% U.S. supply chain of all raw materials and finished components. Relying on an import based supply chain opens up your project to significant delays and cost increases There are multiple turf installation companies that source their synthetic turf and materials from overseas and leave your project susceptible to delays in completion. By choosing to work with a 100% United States based turf manufacturer, you eliminate supply chain issues as a project risk. One way to limit that risk is to include verbiage in your project solicitation that specifically states the turf required for the project must be manufactured in the United States, for example:

“Manufacturer: The Turf Vendor must be a United States Turf Manufacturer and make its own slit film AND monofilament turf fibers and finished turf systems “in-house” at its own manufacturing facilities, and these facilities MUST be located in the United States. The Turf Vendor must install this type of artificial turf system with its own in-house installation crews, and provide project references of the synthetic grass system being installed with its own installation crews at 300 similar exterior sites in the United States over the last 5 years, a minimum of 65,000 square feet each.”

Incomplete Project Awaiting Turf

Not only are the quality, consumer and safety standards stricter in the United States, but now its taking significantly longer to import turf components like yarn fibers for turf manufacturing or finished turf products. Many of supply chain issues have pushed back completion dates of turf fields by weeks and sometimes even Months! When your project installation date is reliant on imported turf, you are unable to manage schedule risk to your project. By partnering with a company that is a United States Turf Manufacturer, you will have the ability to reduce the impact of supply chain issues.

Recently a project at Drake Field located in Sioux Falls, SD experienced this exact issue first hand with a multi-month project delay and no firm start date in sight. Nathan Powell, The director of Parks and Recreation had this to say,

“The company that was chosen to install the artificial turf at Drake Field, Mid-America Sports Construction, couldn’t get artificial turf this year as initially expected. Despite the uncertainty of when the contractor will get the turf to install, Powell anticipates it will arrive for crews to complete the roughly $410,000 project by the spring.” (source: Yahoo 8/24/2021)

The Sports Complex Supervisor Jeremy Nielsen stated “Mitchell’s Drake Field is just one of twelve fields that the company can’t get installed by Fall 2021.”

Sprinturf collaborated with North Star Construction on the installation of the turf system at Sacarmento State’s football field. The Predator turf system was instrumental in the offering and decision of the University Officials. The playing surface at the football and track and field venue, which hosted the Olympic trials in 2000 and 2004, was natural grass for 41 years after it opened in 1969 before switching to a turf field in 2010.

Installation of the New Sacramento State Football Field

When it came time to replace its original turf field, Sacramento State University opted for a surface that not only improves the experience for its players while delivering greater safety, but also provides a cooler surface during the hot summer months. The Predator turf system also mimics the look and feel of natural grass.

“Sprinturf has a proud history of manufacturing, installing and maintaining the best, longest lasting synthetic turf systems in America. The Predator turf system is yet another example of our commitment to provide our customers with the highest performing, and most aesthetically pleasing turf systems possible,”
Justin Reddy, President of Sprinturf.

Despite being introduced in 2020, the Predator turf system is quickly being adopted by public and private schools, colleges and universities, and parks and recreation departments across the U.S. This includes the Reitz Bowl at FJ Reitz High School and Central Stadium in Evansville, Indiana. The Hornets will play their first game on the new Sacramento State Football field this Saturday, September 11, 2021. Sacramento State will host Northern Iowa University. The game can be seen on ESPN+. To view the time-lapse installation of the Sprinturf Predator turf system at Sacramento State University, click here.

Colorado Switchbacks Unveil New Synthetic Turf Soccer Field

Colorado Springs, CO (June 15, 2021)

Construction of the new Weidner Field, home of the Colorado Springs Switchbacks has been completed. SprinTurf was selected to partner with the club to install the new synthetic turf soccer field.  The entire SprinTurf team was very excited to work with the Switchback Football Club and its President (Nick Ragain) to complete the installation of their new synthetic turf soccer field.

The official attendance of the home opener was about 5,600 which was about 70% of the new stadiums capacity. SprinTurf was thrilled to provide a very unique type of turf system to the Switchbacks. The Switchbacks head coach Brendan Burke stated the field plays much better than  a standard synthetic turf field, which uses infill material such as crumb rubber.” Coach Burke is specifically referencing the proprietary infill system that SprinTurf integrated into the new synthetic turf soccer field at Weidner Stadium.

Jimmy Ockford #15 on the Switchbacks and the Team Captain had this to say about his first time playing on the new field:
“It is amazing and the new turf was well put together…the surface plays very well.”

This was a major project for the SprinTurf team and we were thrilled to work with such an exceptional club.  The level of involvement and collaboration from multiple entities made this a unique experience. Additionally, one of the most unique aspects of this synthetic turf soccer field was the infill that was included at Weidner Field. Before the installation the infill had to undergo extensive performance testing in Europe for over 120 days. The “Corkonut” infill used is USDA Certified Organic and meets FIFA Quality and FIFA Quality Pro field performance criteria. SprinTurf’s synthetic turf system had to fulfil the quality requirements necessary for soccer in terms of playing performance, safety, durability, and quality assurance. Some of the items that were measured during the testing included interaction between the player and the surface, as well as seam strength, service life, weather resistance, and product composition.

The infill material itself is a naturally blended coconut & cork combination that enhances overall player safety by providing grass-like turf field temperatures. Additionally, the installed system at Weidner Field offers performance and safety that helps to reduce the incidence of injuries, concussions, and abrasions. Athletes have praised this system due to the fact that it enhances foot stability, rotational resistance, and energy restitution. Jordan Buke who is a defender on the Switchbacks team stated, “compared to regular turf its night and day, the ball rolls perfectly,  and it feels good on your body. When you come to training its a pleasure because this turf plays like a grass field.”

Along with being the home of the Switchbacks; Weidner Field will also be playing host to the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) Boys Soccer Championship Games.  Justin Saylor who is the administrator for CHSAA soccer says that this will be a great opportunity to take their event to a world class facility like Weidner Field.” The same SprinTurf proprietary turf and infill system will also been installed at Colorado College (Stewart Field) and soon at Panorama Park outside of Colorado Springs. The SprinTurf Team is excited for the Grand Opening of Weidner Field and look forward to all of the amazing events that it will play host to in the upcoming years. Go Switchbacks!
